Pardew hopes Ba will stay

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew remains confident that he can persuade Demba Ba, who scored twice on Monday against Wigan Athletic, will stay at the club.

Pardew is keen to tie the 27-year-old Senegal international to a long-term contract but negotiations are frustrating as the striker has a condition in his contract which can be activated in any transfer window by a club that wants to take advantage of it.

Ba has already scored ten goals this season after grabbing a brace in the 3-0 win against the Latics, but his current Newcastle deal expires in 2014.

Europa League the target for Maicon

Maicon believes Manchester City will one day win the Champions League but, for the time being, wants them to qualify for the Europa League.

The Brazilian right-back scooped Europe's biggest prize during his Inter Milan days and knows what it takes to succeed in the competition.

City have fallen at the first hurdle for the second successive season, amongst the elite bracket, but can still qualify for the Europa League if they win at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night and Ajax fail to do so at Real Madrid.

Arteta: Players must put things right

Mikel Arteta says it is up to the Arsenal players to turn the club's season around following Saturday's home defeat to Swansea.

The Gunners were outplayed at the Emirates by the Swans, who won thanks to two late goals. The fans voiced their frustration at the end of the match and Arteta admits things must change.

The defeat left Arsenal 10th in the league and they are now 1/1 to finish in the top four.

Mourinho continues to impress Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly leaving Real Madrid at the end of this season, could replace him as Manchester United manager.

Mourinho has already won 21 trophies during his managerial career with the likes of FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but is coming under increasing pressure at Real following his side's poor start to the La Liga campaign.

A report in Marca on Monday suggested Mourinho would definitely be leaving Real Madrid next summer - even if they win the Champions League.

Crucial times for Arsenal - Wenger

Arsene Wenger thinks that his Arsenal side can get themselves back among the Premier League title hopefuls before the end of the calendar year.

The Gunners have six league games before the end of December and with four of them being at home, Wenger is looking for a strong run of form, starting against Swansea City on Saturday.

Despite his side already being 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester United, an upbeat Wenger told his club's official website: "We will come back.
