Nadal out of Australian Open

Rafael Nadal's much-anticipated comeback has been put on hold after he was forced to withdraw from next month's Australian Open.

The Spaniard hasn't been seen in a competitive match since this year's Wimbledon after being forced off the circuit with tendonitis in his left knee.

After a six month absence the 26-year-old was expected to make his return at the ongoing  exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

However, a stomach virus forced him to pull out of the competition and Nadal has now confirmed he isn't ready to play a major tournament having had his preparations ruined by the illness.

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well as predicted by the doctors, but this virus didn't allow me to practise this past week," the Spaniard said in a statement.

"Therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in."

The Spaniard reached the final in Melbourne last January before he was defeated by world number one Novak Djokovic in a five set epic.

As for Nadal, he may now wait until the start of the clay court season to make his return, with the surface more conducive to his troublesome knees.

Despite all his recent injury problems Nadal is 5/6 to win an eighth French Open title.
