Europa League the target for Maicon

Maicon believes Manchester City will one day win the Champions League but, for the time being, wants them to qualify for the Europa League.

The Brazilian right-back scooped Europe's biggest prize during his Inter Milan days and knows what it takes to succeed in the competition.

City have fallen at the first hurdle for the second successive season, amongst the elite bracket, but can still qualify for the Europa League if they win at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night and Ajax fail to do so at Real Madrid.

City are 12/5 to beat Dortmund while the Bundesliga outfit are available at 1/1 to take the three points and the draw is 14/5.

The overriding feeling amongst City fans is they should now concentrate all their efforts on retaining their Premier League crown and Sunday's huge derby clash against Manchester United.

But Maicon insists: "We are playing for pride, but also for practical reasons, because we want to carry on playing in Europe, even if it's not in the top competition.

"The Europa League is important to us, so we need to stay in Europe until the end of the season if we can. There is nothing missing at City.

"The club is growing all the time and sooner or later City will win the Champions League because everyone is working for that. There are great players here but they need more experience of the Champions League. You have to tune in to playing in Europe, as it is very different to playing in your home league."
